Under the chin
Submental fullness can arise from fat, loose skin, muscle anatomy, salivary glands or jaw/chin projection. The cause should be separated before treating fat.

Fat dissolving injections, also called injection lipolysis, are a minimally invasive body-contouring option for carefully selected, small pockets of subcutaneous fat. They are not a weight-loss treatment, cannot remove visceral fat, and do not replace liposuction when a larger or more predictable contour change is required.

“A small bulge may be fat, loose skin, muscle laxity, gland tissue or a combination. Injection treatment makes sense only after identifying the tissue that is actually creating the contour.”Dr. Pawan Shahane, M.Ch. Plastic Surgery · Mayflower Clinic, Nagpur
Injection lipolysis is a minimally invasive technique in which a lipolytic formulation is introduced into selected subcutaneous fat. Depending on the active substance, fat-cell membranes may be disrupted and the treated tissue then undergoes a local inflammatory and clearance process over time.
The change is therefore not equivalent to suctioning fat out during liposuction. Early swelling can temporarily make the area look larger before the inflammatory response settles and the final contour can be assessed.
Evidence and regulatory approval are not identical for every formulation or every body area. Deoxycholic-acid treatment has the strongest established regulatory pathway for selected submental fat beneath the chin in some jurisdictions. Broader body use and other lipolytic formulations require more careful product-specific and area-specific counselling.
Product choice is made after examination. The treatment should not be reduced to choosing a brand from an advertisement.
Mayflower Clinic may use doctor-selected lipolytic formulations, including products such as Lipo Lab and CLINICCARE Reduce, when Dr. Pawan Shahane considers the formulation, source, ingredients, intended treatment area, medical history and expected benefit appropriate for that individual patient.
These products are not presented on this website as interchangeable with one another, and their regulatory status, labelled indications and evidence base can differ by formulation and country.
In particular, patients should not assume that the existence of an injectable fat-dissolving product means that it is approved for every body area. Product identity, provenance, composition, expected response, alternatives and relevant regulatory considerations should be discussed before treatment.
An anatomical area is not automatically an indication. Each zone has different nerves, vessels, skin quality, underlying structures and alternative treatments.
Submental fullness can arise from fat, loose skin, muscle anatomy, salivary glands or jaw/chin projection. The cause should be separated before treating fat.
A limited pinchable pocket may be assessed. Visceral fullness, abdominal-wall laxity, pregnancy-related muscle separation and hernia are different problems.
Small focal deposits may be suitable in selected patients, but broader circumferential contouring often requires comparison with liposuction.
Skin laxity commonly contributes to upper-arm appearance. Reducing fat alone may not improve—and can sometimes expose—loose skin.
Inner thigh, outer thigh and knee fullness need separate contour assessment. Cellulite and skin laxity are not the same as localised fat.
Back, bra-line or other small areas may be assessed only after confirming that treatment can be performed within safe anatomical and product-specific limits.
The least invasive treatment is not automatically the most suitable treatment.
| Pathway | Main target | Typical scale | Access | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Injection lipolysis | Small localised subcutaneous fat deposits | Limited / gradual | Injections | Not a large-volume or weight-loss treatment |
| External non-surgical fat reduction | Selected small fat pockets compatible with the device | Usually modest / gradual | Through intact skin | Technology-specific response and limitations |
| Liposuction | Larger or more definite localised subcutaneous fat contouring | Greater direct fat removal | Small surgical access points | More recovery; does not reliably correct major loose skin |
| Abdominoplasty | Excess abdominal skin ± abdominal-wall laxity | Major structural change | Surgery | Scar and longer structured recovery |
The location, size and type of fullness are discussed together with weight history, previous procedures and the degree of change you actually want.
Skin quality, fat thickness and deeper anatomy are examined. Visceral fat, glandular tissue, hernia, muscle laxity or another cause may change the plan.
Observation, weight stability, external non-surgical treatment, liposuction or surgery may be more appropriate depending on the anatomy.
Product identity, relevant ingredients, treatment area, expected swelling, possible benefit, limitations, risks and available alternatives are reviewed.
Treatment is planned for the selected anatomical zone. The exact method and comfort measures depend on the area and formulation.
Tenderness, swelling, bruising or altered sensation can occur. The area should not be assessed for final contour while early inflammation is still present.
Repeat treatment should not be automatic. The response, residual fat, skin appearance and patient satisfaction are reviewed first.
The treated area may initially become swollen, tender or firm. Early photographs do not represent the final result.
Injection lipolysis is best suited to a limited contour correction. Patients seeking substantial volume reduction should compare surgical options.
Normal bodies are asymmetric and tissue response varies. Residual fullness or contour difference can remain.
Some patients require more than one session, while others should stop, change treatment or choose another pathway after review.
Treatment does not prevent future fat accumulation or body-contour changes associated with weight gain, ageing or pregnancy.
Fat reduction does not reliably contract substantially loose skin. In some patients, skin laxity becomes more noticeable after volume reduction.
Product-specific instructions given to you at the clinic take priority over general website advice.
Local swelling, tenderness, bruising, firmness or altered sensation may occur. The degree depends on the product and treatment area.
Follow the written instructions for bathing, skincare and any dressing or topical care if these are required for your treatment area.
Do not squeeze, knead or massage treatment sites unless Dr. Shahane has specifically advised this for the product used.
Many patients can continue routine activity, but comfort and the treated area should guide exercise and strenuous activity during early swelling.
Persistent lumps, increasing redness, severe pain or skin changes should be medically reviewed rather than repeatedly massaged or treated with unprescribed medicines.
A review determines whether the area is healing normally and whether further treatment is sensible.
“Non-surgical” does not mean risk-free. Complications vary with the formulation, anatomy, treatment depth, sterility and patient factors.
Dr. Pawan Shahane is an M.Ch. Plastic Surgeon with training in aesthetic and reconstructive surgery. This is useful because the same contour concern can sometimes require a very different solution.
A plastic surgeon can compare minimally invasive treatment against direct fat removal, skin-excision procedures, structural correction or no procedure at all rather than treating every bulge as a candidate for injections.
Qualifications do not guarantee a particular result. Patient selection, correct anatomy, product choice, sterile technique, realistic expectations and follow-up remain essential.

There is no responsible single online price that applies to every patient. The treatment area and formulation have to be decided first.
Cost can vary according to:
A quotation should therefore follow examination rather than forcing every patient into a fixed injection package.

General information only. Your anatomy, medical history and the exact formulation determine individual suitability.
Fat dissolving injections, or injection lipolysis, use an injectable lipolytic formulation to disrupt selected subcutaneous fat cells. The treated tissue then undergoes an inflammatory and clearance process over time. The method is intended for localised contouring, not general weight loss.
No. They are intended for selected small localised subcutaneous fat deposits. They do not reduce visceral fat, treat obesity or replace appropriate medical and lifestyle management of body weight.
Depending on anatomy, the exact formulation and its intended use, selected areas such as submental fat beneath the chin or other small localised body-fat deposits may be assessed. Not every formulation is appropriate for every anatomical area.
They should not be relied upon to correct significant loose skin. Patients with substantial skin laxity may require a different treatment, and reducing underlying fat can sometimes make loose skin more noticeable.
There is no universal session number. It depends on the product, treatment area, amount of localised fat, tissue response, safety considerations and the degree of change sought. The response should be reviewed before another session is planned.
Improvement is gradual. Early swelling can temporarily obscure the contour, and adequate time should be allowed for inflammation to settle before the result is judged or further treatment is considered.
Many patients can continue ordinary daily activity, but swelling, tenderness, bruising, firmness or altered sensation can be noticeable. The extent of downtime varies with the product, area and individual tissue response.
Possible effects include swelling, pain, bruising, firmness, numbness, nodules, contour irregularity, pigmentation change and inadequate response. More serious complications can include infection, tissue injury, ulceration, nerve injury or allergic/inflammatory reactions.
Mayflower Clinic may use doctor-selected lipolytic formulations, including products such as Lipo Lab and CLINICCARE Reduce, when Dr. Pawan Shahane considers the exact product, source, ingredients, treatment area and patient suitable. The products are not treated as interchangeable, and regulatory status and labelled indications can differ between formulations and countries.
Treatment can reduce fat cells within the treated zone, but it does not make the area immune to future body changes. Remaining fat cells can enlarge with weight gain, and ageing, pregnancy and changes in skin elasticity can alter the contour later.
Liposuction may be more appropriate when a larger amount of subcutaneous fat must be removed, several zones need contouring or the patient wants a degree of change that injection treatment is unlikely to provide.
Elective cosmetic injection lipolysis should be deferred during pregnancy. Breastfeeding and other medical situations also require product-specific assessment before elective treatment is considered.

Fat-dissolving injections are not one uniform treatment category. Products can contain different active ingredients and can have different regulatory indications. Published evidence is strongest for selected deoxycholic-acid treatment of submental fat, while broader use of other formulations is less standardised.
The United States FDA specifically warns that several marketed fat-dissolving products, including Lipo Lab, are not FDA-approved in the United States and has reported complications after unapproved injections. An FDA status does not by itself determine a product’s regulatory status in India; it does, however, reinforce the importance of knowing the exact product, source, ingredients, treatment area and applicable local regulatory requirements before treatment.
A consultation can distinguish a small injectable fat pocket from loose skin, visceral fullness or a contour that would be better treated with another technique.
